NITROUS by Joji

When George Miller gave up his YouTube comedy career in 2018 to pursue music as Joji, he had no idea that his debut album "BALLADS 1" would make him the first Asian American to top hip hop charts.

Two years later, Joji released his angsty sophomore album "Nectar." While several tracks are worth writing about, the one that's looped in my mind is "NITROUS."

The title refers to Nitrous Oxide, also known as laughing gas, which produces elated dizziness and sedation. Joji analogizes this high to unrequited, erratic infatuation. Anxieties around his relationship rev "loud like motorcycles" as he attempts to hide within his fast-paced, luxe lifestyle.

American producer Clams Casino has a hand in the production of "NITROUS," making it the second collaboration between the two musicians. The soundscape is cartoonish with its bouncy beat and leveled out in the tempo, giving it an overall sense of coolness.

NITROUS balances a sense of apprehension and ego-drive escapism in an upbeat groove that blends elements of Lo-fi and R&B. Perfect for bopping around and short enough to be left on replay, Joji cultivates a sound that leaves you no choice but to dance with your demons.
